The story of Charles Combs and how folks came together when he needed it most.
It was an honor to be a hand up for our fellow brother in arms Charles Combs. Charles purchased his home two years ago and followed the standard protocol of hiring a “qualified home inspector” to evaluate the property. Unfortunately he soon discovered that his HVAC system was in a failed state, something that should have been flagged before the purchase. This was not a simple repair. The heat exchangers were severely compromised and leaking carbon monoxide into his home.
Being the man he is, Charles refused to risk his family’s safety for convenience. He shut the heat down right away. That was two years ago. In the meantime he sectioned off parts of the house with plastic to control what little heat space heaters could provide.
I am thankful to be part of this story because Charles shows the kind of character our heroes are made of. He was not looking for a handout. He took responsibility, faced the challenge head on, and did everything he could with what he had. I am also grateful for partners like Johnstone Supply in Spartanburg who help us give a true hand up to men like Charles.
I shudder to think where I would be without brothers and sisters who carried me when my face was in the dirt.
Love y’all.
